The New Revised Standard Bible is the latest of the Bible versions in the tradition and genealogy of the King James Version. It has quickly become a scholarly standard because of its careful adherence to scholarly consensus positions, good footnoting of translation alternatives, and the lack of unusual or peculiar renderings in the text. It is a formal equivalency translation in that it adheres quite closely to the forms of the original language, rather than using periphrastic English rendering to convey the meaning of the original languages.
If you worship in a mainline protestant denomination it is quite possible that you have encountered this version in your pew Bibles, or possibly in the International Lesson Series used in Sunday School.
HarperCollins Study Bible (Highly Recommended)
The HarperCollins Study Bible represents the best efforts of a consensus group of Biblical scholars from the Society of Biblical Literature. It's fine introductions and excellent text will be a major help to any student in serious Bible study. I personally prefer the New Oxford Annotated Bible (REB), but this is definitely a close second and many will prefer it for serious study.
