To Robert Cornwall– I don’t think you mean that the answer is to “pretty-up” the Bible by taking away stumbling blocks. There will never be a time when all the “original cultural realities” will be overcome by translation. People will have to deal with them to the end of the age. Even if we could erase patriarchy, left still are the genocidal passages, the pre-scientific cosmology, an accommodation with slavery, and a host of notions that don’t sit well in our day. Removing inclusive language where it is appropriate will hardly make a dent in efforts to keep people from giving up on the Bible.
